I found an interesting article in yesterday's Washington Post about a new business start-up calledWEbook.com. What this new web business intends to do is "leverage the community of would-be authors to write books, or at least improve them." This company is basically a social networking site for aspiring writers where you can get feedback on your own writing projects, review and provide suggestions on the work of others, or you can join community writing projects. WEbooks also says they publish books for sale through stores like Amazon or Barns and Noble.com. The site FAQ says they "want to do for publishing what American Idol did for music."
I've said before I'm no fan of social networking sites, but the concept sounded interesting so I joined. I have to admit, I have always had closet fantasies of being a writer. Ever since my young days I've had stories rolling around in my brain, but these multiplied once I got into genealogy. I'd love to tell the story of my 8th great grandfather (Danial Cone) who was a Scottish Soldier captured by the English at theBattle of Dunbar in 1650 and sold as an indentured servant to work in North America; or the story of my paternal grandfather (Antonio Agazio) who immigrated from Southern Italy at the age of 13 and fended for himself as he worked his way across Canada and eventually to Colorado; or I would love to edit my mother's letters covering her 2 years in the Navy during World War II - there are many others. The problem is I struggle to put together a couple of grammatically correct paragraphs when I write for my blog, and still I'm not always successful. I wouldn't know where to begin on the stories I mentioned above. I thought I'd join and see how everything works then decide if I want to participate.
There probably other sites like this out there, but I chose this one because it's local (to me) and the website seems pretty functional. We will see how it goes....
