Footnote.com - Genealogy and History at it's best
I'm horrible at keeping New Years Resolutions - probably because they were always unrealistic to begin
with. I think I stopped making them back in my 20's because after about 2-3 weeks I'd promptly forget all about it. Now that I'm older, and more practical, I'll still probably forget them, but I've read so many great resolutions from other genea-bloggers I figured I should probably take another stab at it....so here goes:
1. Win the lottery. When this happens I will quit my job and spend all of my days researching and blogging and blogging and researching. This way I won't have to write my posts late at night or really early in the morning. (Now you can see why I stopped making resolutions...I'll get serious now)
2. Make the time to participate in more of the various Carnivals. Last year I contributed to only two Carnival of Genealogy editions and one Carnival of Irish Heritage and Culture. I've wanted to do a lot more, but they were just too hard to fit into the schedule. I really like the way the Carnivals make me think deeper about a subject than I usually do, and I've really enjoyed the experience each time I've participated. They also make me work harder on my writing and editing skills which I know need vast improvement.
3. Concentrate on my Irish, German, and Scottish ancestors. Most of the last couple of years I've focused mainly on my Italian grandparents and their immigration experiences. I really identify with this side of my family and had some great successes - especially finding family members in Calabria, Italy and having them visit me. I want to dig into my Irish, German and Scottish heritage the same way I dug into my Italian side.
4. I want to read more. With work and evening/weekend kid activities I've had a hard time fitting it in - and for a guy with a passion for history this is not a good thing. I can't read in bed because as soon as I lay down I go to sleep and don't want to choose between blogging and reading. I need to carve out more time for reading.
5. Keep building the readership of my blog. I'm still amazed that I actually have regular readers who find something of interest here. About 75% of my daily traffic are new visitors and I want to try to make some of them stick. I know the only way to do this is to regularly and consistently write good stuff, but this is hard to do. I get readership spikes every time I write an in-depth post or a Carnival article so I want to do this type of writing more consistently this year.
That's about all the resolutions I can handle and hopefully next year at this time I will look back and see some progress.
