Even though the Sand Creek tragedy was recognize as a criminal act back in 1864, it took a long time to kill the myth. During my elementary and junior high school years in Denver (during the 1960s), I
remember reading about the "Battle" of Sand Creek. I remember being a bit confused at the time and wondered how could there be a battle when one side consisted of soldiers and the other only unarmed old people, women and children. The Sand Creed Massacre is one of the more shameful parts of Colorado history, and it's great to see the victims honored by a memorial - even if it's 142 years late. Here's a quick overview of the event from Wikipedia for anyone interested.
